Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a highly effective treatment for varicose and spider veins, commonly used to improve the appearance of small veins and relieve related discomfort.

The Gold Standard for Treating Spider & Varicose Veins

It is a minimally invasive procedure that provides long-lasting results with little to no downtime.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

The treatment involves injecting a solution directly into the affected veins. This irritates the vein walls, causing them to collapse and be absorbed into the body over time. Blood is naturally rerouted through healthier veins, and the treated veins fade from view.

Results typically begin to show within a few weeks, but it may take a month or more to see the full effects. Some people may require multiple treatments to achieve their desired results.

When Will I See Results?

Results depend on the size of the treated area and the number of sessions required. Typically:

  • Small areas (e.g. chin, jowls) – 1 to 3 treatments

  • Larger areas (e.g. thighs, abdomen) – 2 to 8 treatments

Treatments are spaced six weeks apart, and the full results will be visible six weeks after your final session. A complimentary review with your practitioner will assess your progress.

The Sclerotherapy Procedure

Before treatment, we will conduct a thorough consultation and medical evaluation, including:

  • Assessing your medical history and any existing conditions

  • Reviewing current medications, especially blood thinners or anti-inflammatory drugs

  • Checking for underlying vascular conditions

  • Taking pre-treatment photos for comparison

Preparation:

  • Avoid shaving or applying lotion on treatment day.

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing – shorts are ideal.

  • No anaesthesia is required, and the procedure takes less than an hour.

During the procedure, you will lie on your back with your legs slightly elevated. The targeted area will be cleansed before a fine needle injects the sclerotherapy solution into the vein.

  • You may feel mild stinging or cramping.

  • Your practitioner will massage the area and apply compression to help distribute the solution and prevent blood from re-entering the vein.

  • A compression pad may be taped to the site before moving on to the next vein.

The number of injections varies based on the size and number of veins being treated.

Post-Treatment Guidelines

To aid recovery and enhance results, avoid:

  • Swimming pools, spas, and saunas for three days

  • Strenuous exercise for 10 days

  • Other aesthetic treatments in the treated area for two weeks

Why Choose Sclerotherapy?

People seek sclerotherapy for both cosmetic and medical reasons. It can help with:

  • Reducing the appearance of varicose and spider veins

  • Improving circulation and preventing complications

  • Relieving discomfort such as:

    • Aching

    • Swelling

    • Burning sensations

    • Night cramps

Please note: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, we recommend waiting before undergoing this treatment.

Potential Risks & Side Effects

Sclerotherapy is generally safe, with few serious complications. However, some temporary side effects at the injection site may include:

  • Bruising

  • Raised red areas

  • Small skin sores

  • Darkened lines or spots

  • Clusters of tiny red blood vessels

These side effects usually fade within a few days to weeks, though some may take longer to disappear completely.

Rare but Possible Complications

  • Inflammation – Mild swelling, warmth, or discomfort may occur. Over-the-counter pain relief (e.g. ibuprofen) can help.

  • Blood clot – A small clot may form in a treated vein and require drainage. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a rare but serious risk that can lead to pulmonary embolism. Seek immediate medical help if you experience difficulty breathing, chest pain, dizziness, or coughing up blood.

  • Air bubbles – Tiny bubbles may enter the bloodstream, potentially causing temporary vision issues, headaches, nausea, or fainting. Contact your doctor if you have persistent symptoms.

  • Allergic reaction – Rare but possible, some people may be sensitive to the solution used during treatment.

Aftercare & Recovery

You can walk around immediately after the procedure, as movement helps prevent blood clots.

For optimal results, follow these post-care guidelines:

Wear compression stockings or bandages for about two weeks
Avoid strenuous exercise for two weeks
Limit sun exposure to prevent pigmentation changes
Return to normal activities the same day, but consider having someone drive you home

When Will I See Results?

  • Small veins & spider veins – Results usually appear within 3–6 weeks

  • Larger varicose veins – May take several months

  • Follow-up treatments – If needed, sessions should be spaced 6 weeks apart

While treated veins do not return, new veins may develop over time. Regular maintenance sessions may be required.
