PDO Threads

PDO Thread Lifts are a modern, non-surgical method used to lift and tighten sagging skin, providing a youthful appearance.

What is a PDO Thread Lift?

It is an ideal option for those who wish to improve skin firmness without resorting to incisions or cuts. Instead of surgery, PDO threads are introduced into the skin through fine needles, helping lift the face and stimulate collagen production.

How Does it Work?

PDO threads are thin, medical-grade threads made from Polydioxanone, a material that helps promote the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Research has shown that PDO threads relax tendons and muscles, enhancing blood flow to the area and stimulating the skin’s natural healing process, which leads to new collagen formation. Over time, this results in tighter, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.

What Happens During Treatment?

The procedure begins with the application of a Lidocaine injection to numb the area. PDO threads are then introduced into the skin, muscle, or subcutaneous fat through fine needles or cannulas. While the results are visible immediately, the full effects improve over several weeks as collagen production continues. This leads to firmer skin, a reduction in fine lines, and an overall smoother texture.

Post-Treatment Care

After a PDO thread lift, it’s crucial to follow specific aftercare instructions to achieve the best results:

  • Sleeping: Avoid sleeping on your stomach or side during the first five nights post-treatment to prevent swelling, bruising, or misplacement of the threads.

  • Wearing Makeup: Refrain from wearing makeup during the first 12 hours post-procedure to avoid irritating the skin and allow it to breathe.

  • Facial Massages & Facials: Avoid facials and facial massages for the first 10 days to prevent pressure from displacing the threads.

  • Heat Exposure: Avoid excessive heat (hot showers, saunas, sunbathing) for several weeks to prevent elevated blood pressure.

  • Alcohol & Smoking: Refrain from drinking alcohol for two weeks and smoking, as both can hinder the healing process by constricting blood vessels and reducing nutrient flow to the skin.

  • Vigorous Exercise: While light activities like walking and swimming are fine, intense exercise should be avoided for the first two weeks.

Is it Safe?

PDO threads have been used in medical procedures for over a decade, particularly in surgery and wound closure, and they have an excellent safety track record. They also have CE approval, ensuring they meet the necessary health and safety standards.

Which Areas can be Treated?

PDO threads are versatile and can treat various areas of the face and neck. Popular areas include sagging brows, nasolabial folds, forehead wrinkles, drooping cheeks, marionette lines, sagging jawlines, and chin and neck wrinkles.

What Results can I Expect?

The immediate results of a PDO thread lift are visible right after the procedure, though the most significant improvements are noticed in the weeks following. Collagen production peaks around six months, with results lasting between 1 to 3 years. While PDO threads are biodegradable and dissolve within 12 weeks, the collagen they stimulate continues to support the skin’s texture and firmness.

Who is Suitable for PDO Thread Lifts?

PDO thread lifts are most suitable for individuals with sagging skin or fine lines looking for a non-surgical solution. However, the treatment is not recommended for those with active acne, broken skin, or certain health conditions. People who have taken anticoagulation medications (like aspirin, warfarin) or consumed alcohol within 48 hours of treatment should avoid the procedure.

Potential Side Effects

While PDO thread lifts generally have minimal downtime, some common side effects may occur:

  • Redness and Soreness: The treated area may feel tight or slightly sore for a few days.

  • Swelling: A small amount of swelling is normal, especially in the first few days.

  • Tightness and Stinging: As the threads stimulate collagen production, some discomfort is expected.

  • Bruising and Bleeding: Minor bruising may occur around the treatment areas.

In rare cases, the following side effects can occur:

    • Thread Protrusion: The threads may become visible if not properly placed.

    • Granuloma Formation: A small lump of tissue may form around the thread.

    • Infection: As with any procedure involving needles, there’s a slight risk of infection.

    • Migration of Threads: If the threads move, they may cause asymmetry or discomfort.

    • Facial Nerve Trauma: This is an extremely rare complication but may occur if the threads are incorrectly placed.

    • Allergic Reactions: Although rare, some individuals may have an allergic reaction to the PDO threads.
